Wangdue Phodrang lies just south of Punakha, where the valley narrows and the road divides for central Bhutan. Its dzong, founded in the seventeenth century, stood on a ridge above the river until a fire destroyed much of it in 2012. It has since been rebuilt in the traditional way.
Most visitors pass through on the way to Phobjikha, but it is worth a stop. Ask your guide about the rebuilt dzong and the local crafts of the area.
