Bhutan visa and SDF explained

What you must arrange before you go, and what it costs.

Important: Bhutan’s rules and fees have changed several times in recent years, and sources do not always agree. Treat everything here as a starting point and confirm with the official portal, visit.doi.gov.bt, or a licensed operator. We are not a visa service.

The visa

Most nationalities need a visa arranged before travelling. It is applied for online, either by you or by your operator, and sources commonly quote a fee of about US$40. You will need a valid passport, a photo and proof of travel insurance. Apply well ahead of time. Indian nationals follow a separate permit process, and rules for other neighbouring countries may differ.

The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)

The SDF is a nightly fee paid to the government to support conservation, culture and public services. At the time of writing, it is widely reported as US$100 per adult per night, discounted from an earlier US$200, with the discount reported to run until 31 August 2027. Lower rates are reported for children and for Indian nationals. A newer tourism tax has also been reported. Please check the current amount before you budget.

Why most visitors book through operators

The old minimum daily package is gone, and some sources now describe independent travel on the Paro, Thimphu and Punakha corridor, with a guide needed elsewhere. Other sources say something stricter, so confirm before you plan. In practice, most visitors still book with a licensed Bhutanese operator, because it is simpler. The operator handles the visa, permits, hotels, the guide and the driver in one quote.

What to ask an operator

  • Is the SDF included, and at what rate?
  • Is the visa fee included?
  • Which hotels, and are they certified for international visitors?
  • How many nights are in Punakha?
  • What are the cancellation terms?

Using GetYourGuide

Listings on the tours page are run by operators. Check what each one includes, and ask the operator how the visa will be handled.

Visa and SDF FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How much is the SDF right now?

It is widely reported as US$100 per adult per night, but check the official portal because it can change.

Do I pay the SDF for each night?

Yes, it is charged per person, per night in Bhutan.

Can I travel to Punakha without a guide?

Sources conflict. Some report that the Paro, Thimphu and Punakha corridor is possible without one, but check current rules before planning.

Is the SDF included in hotel prices?

Usually not on hotel booking sites. Check at the time of booking.

How early should I apply?

One source suggests at least a week before entry, but apply much earlier, particularly in peak season.
