Open grassland in the Phobjikha valley with forested hills behind

Phobjikha Valley

Wide glacial valley of the black-necked cranes

Beyond Wangdue, the road climbs over the Black Mountains to Phobjikha, a wide glacial valley around the old Gangtey Monastery. After the warmth of Punakha, it feels like another country: open grassland, pine forest and cold, thin air.

From about late November to February, rare black-necked cranes winter on the marshy valley floor. A Black-Necked Crane Festival is held at Gangtey Monastery each November, and a nature trail is popular with walkers.
